Yossarian - The Recessive Allele:
These tracks were considered for the album, but didn't make the final cut. If you haven't yet got a copy of the album itself, order a free copy from the shop.- My Brother's Secret (Alternative Version) features awesome guitar antics from Mike 'Dunbar' Bray and a joyous bassline provided by Rob 'ex-PFC Wintergreen' Jackson.
- New Words 4 New Song was originally meant to be like something Muse would come out with, but I ended up asking Dunbar and Wintergreen to recreate the guitar and drums off the song Lion's Teeth by the Mountain Goats. The title is just what I wrote at the top of the piece of paper. The vocals were recorded when I was slightly drunk.
- Idiosyncrasies & Hidden Depths features guitar by Dunbar once again. Many of these tracks were recorded before I started learning to play the guitar.
- I Don't Want Your Hope is a very early one with bass by Wintergreen and horrific double-tracked vocals.
- How To Be
- Get Well Soon (To Unspecified) is part of a series that began with RSVP (To Emily) and also includes Get Well Soon (To Kate). I'm rather proud of how the organ part interacts with the piano chords.
- The Selfish Song is the earliest song that was considered for the album, and one of only two featuring real piano. It was written in 2002, before I even realised that I could be a singer-songwriter. Originally it had a third verse about Robert the Bruce. In those days the grandeur of my visions knew no bounds.
- Gaol is the first recording on which I played guitar myself. As you can hear, I hadn't yet learnt to allow the plectrum to move between my fingers.
- The Matrix is a pretty crazy one. Listen out for the microphone rolling down the speaker of the keyboard.
- Fighting For Peace is another early one, featuring almost unbearably pretensious lyrics.
- The Fog features beautiful vocals by Maria 'Nately's Whore's Kid Sister' Longson, bass by Dunbar, and real piano. It's really quite lovely. I just wish I'd done the drums on the 8-track a bit better.
- The Kill is a song about when you spot an attractive member of the opposite sex across a crowded bar and manage to build up the courage to go over and chat them up. This isn't something I've ever experienced, but the song describes what I imagine it would be like.
